What are joint injections?
A joint injection is a straightforward procedure that involves injecting a medication and an anesthetic into a painful joint. The injections can be performed in-office, and their convenience and effectiveness at relieving pain make them an excellent solution for many patients.
Are there different kinds of joint injections?
Texas Pain & Rehab Centers offers a wide array of joint injections to meet your unique health needs. The types of joint injections include:
Intra-articular facet joint injections
Facet joint injections use anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving substances to reduce pain in your facet joints, which are the small joints that stabilize your vertebrae. Intra-articular injections deliver the medication directly into the joint to maximize relief.
Sacroiliac joint injections
This procedure diagnoses or treats lower back pain.
Lumbar epidural steroid injections
Epidural injections treat pain from nerve irritation or compression. Your lumbar spine supports your lower back, and this is a common area to experience pain.
Lumbar epidural steroid injections can reduce inflammation in this vital area, taking the pressure off your nerves and reducing pain.
Thoracic epidural steroid injections
Your thoracic spine is above your lumbar spine and makes up the broadest part of your back. This treatment can relieve many pain conditions, such as shooting pain in your back and arm.
Cervical epidural steroid injections
Cervical epidural steroid injections treat the neck. These injections address chronic neck pain, numbness, and muscle weakness.
Major joint injections
Major joint injections can treat arthritic pain, providing your joints with lubrication and relieving pain in your:
- Spine
- Knees
- Ankles
- Hips
- Shoulders
- Elbows

What can I expect from a joint injection procedure?
Your joint injection procedure is performed in-office, and you sit or lie in a comfortable environment. The team may apply a numbing cream or local anesthetic to prevent discomfort.
The injection site is cleaned, and then your provider carefully injects a combination of anti-inflammatory medication and anesthetic into the joint.
What happens after joint injections?
After your procedure, you rest for 15-30 minutes under the team’s observation, and then you can go home to rest. Avoid strenuous activity for the rest of the day, and you may need to avoid taking any of your usual pain medications so the team can ascertain how effective the procedure was.
